Cell and battery pack specifications

Understand ideal series/parallel arithmetic and the additional questions at pack level.

Content updated 2026-10-13 · Technical guide for procurement discussions

Series and parallel counts give an electrical reference. A finished pack also needs confirmed structure, management, protection, interfaces and operating evidence.

Series · S

Voltage scales with series count

Parallel · P

Ah capacity scales with parallel count

Original concept diagram. It does not depict the construction or test result of a specific catalogue item.

Ideal relationships for identical cells

S denotes series count and P denotes parallel count. In an ideal combination of identical cells, series count scales voltage while parallel count scales Ah capacity. Total nominal energy scales with the total cell count.

Relationship / example
V_pack = N_s × V_cell
Q_pack = N_p × Q_cell
E_nom = N_s × N_p × V_cell × Q_cell

The pack adds more than an enclosure

A BMS may monitor voltage, current and temperature, perform protection and balancing, and provide state estimates or communication. The chosen functions and settings depend on the particular solution.

Pack-level itemInformation to confirm
Electrical pathConnections, conductor and connector limits, current sharing and protection.
Mechanical scopeDimensions, restraint, expansion allowance, enclosure and environmental protection.
Thermal scopeHeat transfer, sensors, cooling or heating and temperature control.
System interfaceCharger compatibility, power connection, communication and status information.

Nominal energy and the operating window

Use the complete pack mass for pack-specific energy. The energy available to a load is also affected by the operating voltage/SOC window and the application. In the reference calculator, the selected energy share is an explicit arithmetic assumption, not a calibrated SOC-to-energy curve or runtime prediction.

We organize the requirement and coordinate the relevant manufacturer’s documents and samples. Pack design, suitability assessment and testing are handled by the manufacturer or customer.

Questions to prepare

  • Do you need cells, a module, or a finished pack with defined interfaces?
  • What operating voltage window, energy and mass limits apply?

Common questions

Does a cell rating automatically become the pack rating?

Pack-level hardware, operation and tests must be considered alongside the cells.

Does the calculator provide a finished pack design?

It calculates nominal electrical and mass relationships from your inputs. Design and test confirmation remains a separate project activity.
